Rainy Days

We arrived at Camachee Cove Marina  on Tuesday afternoon, just in time to catch a great bistro before they closed. Called Dessert First, it’s a great place for breakfast or lunch. After lunch, we unloaded the rental car onto the boat. Just in time for a brief rain shower. In the rain, we traveled across the Vivano Beach bridge to the closest Publix for reprovisioning. It stopping raining while we were shopping.

While we were here, we decided to go the beach, not to swim, but for sand for our sand collection. It’s interesting sand, with a layer of broken shell on the surface. Underneath it was fine dark gray sand.

The surf was rough! Two guys were surfing on short boards. Just a couple days ago a guy drowned in the rip current on a St Augustine Beach! Along with the surfers there were a half dozen dolphins surfing too! They would shoot completely out of the water as the wave curled. Amazing!

While we prepared to leave St Augustine on Wednesday the 16th, the weather looked good. Mostly sunny with only a few clouds. As the day wore on, the sky got darker. We could see on our weather radar app that thundershowers were rolling across the peninsula toward the east coast.

The cruise through the Tomoloka River, Guana River and Matanzas River Preserve was a beautiful stretch of waterway, spoiled only by about 6 miles of houses built on a low shoreline. Lots of property value poised to be the first flooded by sea level rise. We made it to Jacksonville Beach Marina before the sky fell. It was a toad-choker!

Cousin Anne and her beau, Terry, met us for a nice dinner at a crowded Safe Harbour Restaurant. The restaurant was closer by dinghy than car! While eating and talking and laughing the rain subsided. After dinner we gave them a (quick) tour of Aquavit and we all toasted with her namesake liquor. Seems like pharmacy is the family trade. We enjoyed their company and look forward to getting together again soon.

Today (Thursday) we made it 65 miles up the ICW through a confusing intersection at the St. John’s and Mayport with the added excitement of a large ship heading out to the Atlantic. What a beautiful coastal landscape through the marshes of Florida and Georgia. Passing Jekyll Island, we recalled a interesting exhibit design project for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

Now at Brunswick Landing Marina, we are spending a couple days to catch up on cleaning and maintenance, combined with a little R & R. We are excited to see our long time friends Bill and Lisa, who settled here after Bill’s final FWS stint at FLTC.  This is a great marina with excellent facilities and lotsa cruisers!

Brunswick Landing Marina - nice facility - and an interesting town. Had a great meal followed by a leisurely stroll touring St. Simon Island, complete with ghost stories expertly told by Lisa. Watch for the lighthouse keeper looking out the tower window!
